云南省自考办成立于2002年3月，是根据《中国共产党第十五届全国代表大会关于加强成人高等教育的决定》和《国务院关于进一步加强成人高等教育工作的意见》等文件组建的专门机构。目前，云南省已有26所成人高等学校开展招生工作。

在过去的几年里，随着成人高等教育的不断发展，云南省各地区也逐步形成了以昆明市、大理市、保山市、德宏傣族景颇族自治州、怒江傈傈族自治州、丽江市、文山壮族苗族自治州、红河哈尼族彝族自治州、曲靖市、玉溪市、昭通市、临沧市、思茅市14个核心区域为主体的“三区三带”格局。这一格局不仅体现在各地区的教学条件和师资力量上，也体现在学生就读的分布上。例如，昆明市是成人本科教学的核心区之一，目前已形成“三所+三区”的发展格局，分别是昆明理工大学、昆明冶金高等专科学校以及盘龙区、官渡区、五华区3个校区。大理市也是成人本科教学的重要区域之一，目前已形成“三所+三区”的发展格局，分别是大理大学、保山中医药高等专科学校以及宾川县、剑川县、弥渡县3个校区。此外，德宏傣族景颇族自治州也是成人本科教学的重要区域之一，目前已形成“三所+三区”的发展格局，分别是德宏傣族景颇族民族大学、怒江傈傈族民族雪龙学院以及德宏傣族景颇族民族传统文化保护中心3个校区。

随着各地方对成人高教的重视度不断加强，各地方对成人本科教学条件也不断完善。例如，近年来德宏傣族���颇族民族传���保���中心通过多项扶持方式对德宏傣族景颇族民族大学进行了全面的升级改造，使其成为一所具有国家一级教学资质、省级重点建设高校的成人本科院校。
