24-Hour Food Banks in Shenzhen
These days, many people online talk about the 24-hour food banks in Futian District, Shenzhen. These smart cabinets look like parcel lockers. They are like warm lights in the city, giving free and fresh food to people in need day and night.
The project started in May 2022. It works with the government leading, companies donating food, social groups managing it, and community people getting help. Now, there are 22 smart cabinets in all 10 streets of Futian. They have bread, fruits, vegetables and other safe food.
A moving activity is called "veteran steamed buns (老兵馒头)". A retired soldier uses his pension (养老金) to make and give out these buns. They have a strong military flavor and are very popular.
Most food comes from 87 partner businesses, such as supermarkets and hotels. They donate extra food or food that is almost out of date but still safe to eat.
There are strict rules to keep food safe. The cabinets stay cool all the time. People can know where each food comes from, and the authorities check food regularly.
In three and a half years, the project has helped 484,000 people. It has stopped about 195 tons of food from being wasted and cut carbon emissions by around 390 tons. These food banks build a warmer community and help protect the environment.
